Chinks in sealed objects

Buildings are artificial constructions. They consist of single parts which must be joined together. To a large degree, the quality of the finished object is determined by the quality of the joins…

Details express what the basic idea of the design requires at the relevant point in the object: belonging or separation. tension or lightness, friction, solidity, fragility…

Details, when they are successful, are note mere decoration. They do not distract or entertain. They lead to an understanding of the whole of which they are an inherent part.

NZ Heralds 12 Questions with Markoni Tonga, the K’ Rd cleaner.

Karangahape Rd is arguably New Zealand’s most famous street. It is chaotic, colourful and, thanks to Markoni Tonga, clean. Markoni – or Marko as he’s known – is the star of K’ Road. He works the day shift, from 7am till 4.30pm, every day except Sundays. Now aged 63, Markoni has walked this beat for 10 years.

Sustainable Quality of Kakariki House by Daniel Marshall - found on archplanner.com

Daniel Marshall has designed Kakariki Houses for grants to local conditions of sustainable quality homes. The building is located behind in the suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand. Articulated structures with different width and timber weatherboards contain all private rooms. Large window in the room that connects directly with the natural landscape. There is no barrier at each of its space, only to unite all of modern furniture.

Stunning Houses Enhance Dramatic Sites

DMA’s Korora on Waiheke Island, Auckland, New Zealand was featured today in the New Zealand Herald.

Places on Waiheke Island and the North Shore won the 2011 NZ Institute of Architects awards for the Auckland area and were among 42 award-winners across all new buildings.

The outstanding houses show how top architects are responding to dramatic settings and how they see their role in leading residential design.

The most theatrical and sprawling is Korora, named after the native Little Blue Penguin. The fortress-style house, which sits on a hill above Matiatia on Waiheke’s northern rural edge, was designed by Daniel Marshall Architect – “a stunning and challenging context in which to design a home”, the judges found.
