Corinth House by Daniel Marshall Architects picked up a Resene Total Colour Award for Best Residential Interior – announced last night. The Resene Total Colour Awards celebrate innovative and excellent colour in the following categories: Product/Display, Residential – Interior, Resene – Exterior, Commercial – Interior, Commercial Exterior, Education, Landscape, Sustainable System, Rising Star (student) and Lifetime Achievement.
Corinth House was also recipient of an NZIA (New Zealand Institute of Architects) Local Award in 2006 & NZIA National Award in 2007. The Corinth House project is an edition to an existing house constructed c.1963, designed by the celebrated modernist architect Vladimir Cacala and was once published in an issue of the international journal Architectural Review. DMA’s addition was designed to complement this fine example of modern architecture in Auckland. As such the interiors, whilst contemporary, draw from various 60′s modern design inspirations. This included various elements of bold color such as the Resene “Flame Red” feature wall.
Comments from Resene:
Working with an existing 1960s home designed by the celebrated modernist architect Vladimir Cacala, the design intention was to provide modern living necessities while disturbing the existing house as little as possible.
The judges felt its exciting to see an architectural project enjoy the bold use of colour shown here. The colour integrated with the use of the recess and the play of shadow gives extra complexity and breaks the continuity of the colour.
It is hard to use primary colours well; it’s difficult to make a primary colour scheme work. The specific hue of red used is restless and aggressive, it advances and moves. Red rises to the ceiling but everything else is more grounded to earth, providing a natural sense of domination. Unexpectedly, because of that domination it draws you into other elements in the room.
