Epsom, Auckland. New Zealand. Tucked on a rear site in suburban Auckland this dwelling disengages with the suburban condition. Entering is a study in secrecy with the garage and front doors clad in the same pre-weathered zinc material as the adjacent walls creating a band which leads through to north facing glazing, protected from summer sun and the ubiquitous rain by the overhanging form of above. This floating pavilion is articulated with varying widths of timber weatherboards and contains all the private spaces. Planned and designed to the local conditions grants the house sustainable qualities, which in turn increases this house’s longevity.
