Mike & Nick Win the AAA Cav Brem

Last night DMA’s Mike Hartley and Nick Sayes won the AAA Cavalier Bremworth Design Awards 2010 for their project, “A Path to Dwell On“.

Judges Jon Craig (co-founder of Craig Craig Moller), Richard Naish (founding director of RTA Studio) and Rachel Neeson with Nick Murcutt (Neeson Murcutt in Sydney) awarded the project with the $5000 grand prize, Christopher Metcalfe trophy and shall be featured in the February issue of Architecture NZ magazine.

Jury Citation

”  Lovely intellectual excersice. Lighthearted on one level and other level thoughtful.

Jury enjoyed this project because it was playful and took a while to assimilate just what was going on yet it sounded so simple.

It worked with an existing condition – mapping the past and looking to the future in envisaging how this camp site would continue to evolve. Then it looked to apply a logic on how to organise a pathway based on use and typography and then introduced an element of process which is playful and you can imagine the whole family getting involved and generations.

It had a sense of cottage industry – elements to do with the hands for all ages. And then steps across easily with a digital overlay which shows how needs change.

The construction mythology was expertly resolved

Delight is that you have something that is like a craft that is shared with a whole family – out of it comes class one concrete or an F6 finish.

Sustainability with an enduring quality

Endless piece of artwok that was of great use. Not dissimilar to the Hanger in complexity.
